Community Challenge Grant Proposal to replant trees on Junipero Serra Blvd. [June 5, 2008]

Lakeside residents Linda and Wolfgang Liebelt have prepared a Grant Application to submit to the San Francisco Community Challenge Grant Program for a grant to improve the Junipero Serra greenbelt by planting 72 trees and to install a drip irrigation system to establish those trees.

In 2006, the Department of Public Works had to remove a significant number or very large trees because they were considered hazardous. The tree removal has opened wide gaps in the plantings on Junipero Serra Blvd, exposing fronting residents to more traffic noise. Unfortunately, the DPW has no available funds to replant what was removed. One funding source is the Community Challenge Grant Program which Sean Elsbernd brought to our attention. The community Challenge Grant Program requires applicants to provide 25% in matching funds. At the March 2, 2008 Annual Meeting, Mr. Liebelt presented a summary of the grant proposal at the annual meeting and the members voted unanimously to allocate $5,000 as the Association’s contribution to the Grant Proposal. In addition, numerous neighbors have committed to volunteer to assist with planting and installation of a drip irrigation system.

Please e-mail the Association to express your support of this proposal. For additional information, contact Linda or Wolfang Liebelt at 415 452-1871
