The San Francisco Police Department, in partnership with the Controller's Office and Police Executive Research Forum, recently began the Organizational Assessment as part of the Police Effectiveness Review (PER). This study seeks to develop a vision for the SFPD and create a plan for implementing this vision by addressing the Department's deployment of staff and resources, recruitment methods, and use of force policies and practices to meet the City's public safety needs and achieve tangible results for its residents and visitors.

The Organizational Assessment kicked-off in fall 2007. Since that time, the project team has been busy gathering input from the community and SFPD to gain a thorough understanding of where the Department is now and to help create a strategic vision for its future. Through focus groups and interviews with community members, city officials, and SFPD personnel, the project team has collected feedback on everything from the public's expectations of the Department to perceptions of its greatest challenges. The vision for the San Francisco Police Department that we develop together will inform the rest of the Organizational Assessment and guide the SFPD over the next decade to become a visionary department of the future.
