14th Boy Scout Troop Work Hard to Tame Plantings at Junipero Serra Park [August 27, 2007]

Charlie Stevens, the boss

On Sunday and Sunday (25th & 26th August) the 14th Boy Scout Troop out of Calvary Presbyterian Church (scout master Bruce Mckleroy) could be found hard at work weeding and cleaning up a lot of the plantings around the edge of Junipero Serra Park. They were working under the leadership of Charlie Stephens, who is a Scout with the 14th troop in training for Eagle Scout. Junipero Serra Playground Park Garden Project is his leadership task to qualify for Eagle Scout. His advisor Mr. Jackson McElmell was present too.

As well as the Scouts there were three representatives from Park and Recreaction department. They were Charles Sheehy (Park Section Supervisor) , John Smith and Diane Tyrrell. They too were working very hard on this project and deserve to be mentioned for their dedication to the beautification of our neighborhood. It was particularly rewarding to see that the work that the dedicated volunteers originally did in planting first the trees and then the flowers and shrubs around the perimeter of the park was being saved from being over-run by the weeds. The original "planting team" has tried a few times to keep the weeds under control, but the job is big enough that it really needs the enthusiasm (and muscle power) of the Boy Scouts!

By end of Sunday the garden had been transformed. What a lucky weekend for Lakeside! We wish to thank all involved for their hard work.
